Hitting The Links For Rochester Charities
What intially looked like a washout turned into a superb day for the Elliot Curwin Memorial Golf Tournament this past June 10, 2008. A brief shower had over a hundred golfers take cover in the Victor Hills Golf course pavillion, yet the storm couldn't dampen the spirits of those who attended.
When the clouds passed, and sunlight broke through the plumbing and HVAC professionals hopped on their golf carts and charged the course. Despite slick greens the golfers exhibited spectacular performances.
What's more, an underdog team composed of Jim and Steve Betlam, Darryl Fishbaugh and VP's very own Bill Nicholls upset the favored winners led by Charley Carney. Congratulations gentlemen, and to everyone else who participated!
The proceeds from the tournament exceeded what had been raised the prior year. A welcome surprise, as the money is benefitting four worthy charities. An exact figure will be released in the coming weeks.
- A trust fund benefitting the children of Steve Johnson, who passed away suddenly on March 9th. Steve owned Duke's Plumbing for the past 10 years. A few years ago Steve and his wife adopted two special needs children. The trust fund has been set up for their future, and in Steve's memory.
- The Make-A-Wish Foundation. In memory of Adam Roe, a 21-year old, VP Supply employee who died suddenly in a motorcycle accident this past March 3rd.
- The Upstate N.Y. Chapter of ALS, a non-profit dedicated to the fight against ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Established in 2003, the chapter offers support groups for patients and families, a respite care program and resource library.
- The Equicenter, a non-profit that uses a wide range of equine therapeutic activities to foster the personal growth and individual achievement of people with disabilities and at-risk youth.
