Understanding Geothermal

A geothermal or "ground-source" heat pump is an electrically powered device that uses the natural heat storage ability of the earth and/or the earth's groundwater to heat and cool your home or business.

QUICK FACTS

Tax Incentives

30% (of total system cost) tax credit on Federal Income Tax
(no cap, must meet Energy Star requirements)

ROI

     About 3 to 5 years

Energy Efficiency

3.5 to 5 times as efficient as the most efficient fossil fuel furnace

Ideal Location

     Basement, garage, or utility room

Size

Can fit in most residential yards

New vs. Remodel

Works well in both situations with a relatively low payback period

HOW IT WORKS

Geothermal heat pumps simply move heat energy from one place to another. By using refrigeration, the geothermal heat pump removes heat energy stored in the earth and/or the earth's groundwater and transfers it to the home. It is a heating and cooling system in one, and can change from one mode to another by switching your thermostat. It can also assist in heating hot water year-round.

Different Loops
There are four types of loops: Horizontal Loop, Vertical Loop, Lake/Pond Loop, and Open Loop. Closed Loop describes a geothermal heat pump system that uses a continuous loop of special buried plastic pipe as a heat exchanger. Open Loop describes a geothermal heat pump system that uses groundwater from a conventional well as a heat source in winter and a heat sink in summer. Unlike an Open Loop system that consumes water from a well, a Closed Loop system recirculates its heat transferring solution in pressurized pipe.

OTHER BENEFITS

Comfort
A very even comfort level is found throughout the home. The warm air is moved in slightly higher volumes and, therefore, saturates the home with warmth more evenly.

No Outdoor Units
Reduces noise, improves the look of your home, and leads to longer system life.

No Fossil Fuels
Not using fossil fuels improves safety and eliminates service lines, flues and air intakes, and site emissions.

Proven Technology
Geothermal systems have been used for over 40 years and millions of units have been installed world-wide in commercial and residential applications.

Saves You Money
Along with tax incentives, geothermal systems can save you 50% to 80% on heating, cooling, and domestic hot water.

Energy Efficiency
Geothermal heat pumps are the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly HVAC systems available.

All Year Round
Since a geothermal system can both heat and cool your home, it can be used all year round in any season.
