Understanding Solar Thermal

Solar Thermal Energy uses the sun's energy to heat water, and typically is applied to domestic hot water, pool and spa heating, and home heating.

HOW IT WORKS

Solar thermal is used to provide domestic hot water, and is one of the most affordable, efficient and environmentally responsible ways to meet this demand. Solar thermal collectors amplify heat energy from the sun to achieve very high temperatures (above 200o Farenheit). Either flat-plate panels or evacuated tube collectors, depending on your application, can provide hot water.

The System
(1) When there is sufficient heat to be drawn from the collectors, a controller automatically activates pumps.
(2) Heated solar fluid is then circulated from the collector,
(3) through a heat exchanger where its heat is transferred to
(4) water in the storage tank.
(5) The solar fluid is then pumped back to the collector to once again be reheated.

Heating Your Water
A solar hot water system is really quite simple. You're using the sun's energy to heat a solar collector full of solar fluid (or water, depending on which type of system you install), which then transfers that heat (or hot water) into your home's hot water tank. The circulation loop shown will continue as long as there is heat to be drawn from the collector. During times when there is little or no sun, a backup heating system will be activated to provide adequate hot water.

OTHER BENEFITS

Savings & ROI
The monetary savings a solar hot water system produces guarantees a sound investment. After the ROI time has passed (up to 10 years), the money saved from your system is profit that your business would have otherwise wasted on high utility rates, which are continually rising.

Preserving The Environment
Action must be taken now to slow down and even reverse the effects of global warming. Installing a solar hot water system will have a significant impact on the amount of CO2 emissions your business produces. It's a giant step in preserving our planet for future generations.

Public Perception
Today's consumer is keenly aware of global warming and the environment. Businesses that "go green" demonstrate to the consumer that it is a company that is taking proactive steps towards environmental preservation.

Rebates & Incentives
Federal and state tax credits allow the solar water installation to pay off faster, and increase the savings and affordability of the system.
